Joe Wright’s ‘Anna Karenina’ Casting Update

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 09:58 AM PDT

Joe Wright's Anna Karenina Cast movie adaptation

Filmmaker Joe Wright faces a situation with his upcoming Anna Karenina adaptation – similar to that which director Cary Fukunaga faced earlier this year with Jane Eyre. Wright is attempting to realize a story on the big screen that has already been adapted for either the film or television medium countless times in the past (over twenty occasions, for the Leo Tolstoy novel in particular).

However, both 19th century literature adaptations (and tragic period romances) are beasts that Wright is quite experienced at handling – as is his Anna Karenina starlet, Kiera Knightley (she previously worked with the director on his Pride and Prejudice and Atonement adaptations).

Knightley will naturally be playing the titular character, the wife of a 19th century Moscow aristocrat named Alexei Karenin ...

Idris Elba may be cast in Pacific Rim for Guillermo del Toro

Hardworking thespian Idris Elba has continued to earn himself a strong following in the film/TV fan community since his breakout role as Russell “Stringer” Bell on HBO’s The Wire some nine years ago.

Jump ahead to the present and he’s not only made another strong impression this year with his turn as Heimdall in Thor, he also has Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus on the horizon – and now, possibly Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim as well. Legendary Picture is reportedly eying Elba as a potential main player in del Toro’s giant monster project, but the timing of this story begs the question: Is this film, not Quentin Tarantino’s Django ...

I'm a Marvel…and I'm a DC: Green Lantern vs. X-Men: First Class

Green Lantern and X-Men: First Class have a lot in common. For one thing, both films are ranked among the summer’s most anticipated superhero movies, even though each of them faced early criticism from fanboys (Green Lantern for unfinished CGI, X-Men for continuity issues).

While Green Lantern doesn’t come out for another couple of weeks (June 17th), X-Men: First Class has been received well by critics (check out our First Class review). Will Green Lantern find the same success?

For fun, resident YouTube genius ItsJustSomeRandomGuy put the two franchises side by side for another edition of his hilarious “I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC” video series.

In this video, Green Lantern and Magneto square off against one another, trading barbs on everything from Green Lantern ...

‘Fear Factor’ Returning to NBC After 5 Years

fear factor nbc return joe rogan

Is Celebrity Apprentice missing that life-and death edge? Craving more insect buffets when you watch The Voice? Your wishes may soon be granted – NBC is bringing thrill-seeking reality game show Fear Factor back to primetime.

NBC’s non-scripted head honcho Paul Teledgy gave the continuously high ratings for Fear Factor reruns on cable channel Chiller as the primary justification for the series’ return. The executive cited the show’s sense of spectacle and brand recognition as major bonuses in the decision.

Fear Factor was based on a Dutch show called Now or Never-land. When NBC imported the format to the States in 2001, it enlisted comedian Joe Rogan as the host – fresh off the end of the station’s sitcom NewsRadio. The show’s three-act format became a quick hit ...

alphas syfy poster tv spots and character profiles

Syfy’s latest original series, Alphas, is scheduled to debut in just over a month. The promotion machine is in full swing, with a cinematic poster and multiple TV promos hyping-up the summer premiere.

Alphas follows Section 8, a team of meta-humans employed by the CIA to find and subdue threats from other ‘Alphas’. Say, this is starting to sound familiar. The team is lead by Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn, Good Night and Good Luck), a normal human (Beta?) psychiatrist who counsels the team and hones their abilities.

First up is Bill Harken, (Malik Yoba, Defying Gravity) a former FBI agent with incredible physical powers. He gains strength, speed and endurance in response to an adrenal rush, the same way normal people ...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 character posters

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 might be one of this summer’s most anticipated movies – but for many fans, watching the long running series reach its inevitable conclusion is bound to be a bittersweet experience. The full-length trailer seemed to promise the no-holds-barred climax we’ve all been waiting for and although it’s gratifying to finally reach the end of this journey – it’s surely going to be difficult for some to say goodbye.

The marketing for this final installment indicates that Warner Bros. is all too aware of the cultural impact that the Harry Potter series has had. The first teaser poster unveiled back in March was simple, iconic, and suitably ominous. The latest batch of ...

Halle Berry May Move to TV for ‘Higher Learning’

Halle Berry TV Higher Learning

After her work on the Wachowskis' ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, former Catwoman and X-Men member Halle Berry is rumored to be headlining the proposed television series Higher Learning – currently being shopped around at HBO and Showtime.

The property from DreamWorks TV already has a completed script written by 30-year television veteran Lee Rose. With the addition of Berry being attached to star, Higher Learning is shaping up to be a major acquisition for one of its potential pay-cable suitors.

Though many details of the proposed series are scarce, we do know that Berry would be playing a college professor – beyond that, however, it's anyone's guess. However, as the program has been offered exclusively to premium channels – passing on network and basic cable channels altogether – it's a safe bet that Higher ...

Paul Greengrass Eying Racing Drama & Tom Hanks Pirate Thriller

Paul Greengrass circling Tom Hanks drama and racing movie

Paul Greengrass looked all but set to make the Martin Luther King Jr. docudrama, Memphis, his next directorial effort – before Universal backed out of financing the film, that is. Now the Oscar-nominated filmmaker has his eye on several other new projects (for the record, though, The Bourne Legacy is definitely not one of them).

Greengrass is reportedly considering three different scripts: Rush, a true-life historical racing drama from Oscar-nominee Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon); Maersk Alabama, an adaptation of the acclaimed non-fiction work “A Captain’s Duty”; and a third, undisclosed film.

Maersk Alabama is easily the most high-profile of those projects – that have been disclosed, at least. Sony is the financial force behind the adaptation, which is being produced by Oscar-winner Scott Rudin (The Social Network) and has Tom Hanks ...

‘Green Lantern: Emerald Knights’ Review

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:52 PM PDT

reviews of green lantern emerald knights

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, the latest animated feature from DC Universe, has more in common with Batman: Gotham Knight than, say, Green Lantern: First Flight. Both Emerald Knights and Gotham Knight were released alongside new feature films from DC/Warner Bros. (The Dark Knight and the upcoming Green Lantern movie), there is the obvious connection of their respective titles, and their format is largely the same (loosely connected short segments).

As with Gotham Knight, some longtime fans of Green Lantern may feel that Emerald Knights has little to offer: for new fans who have gained interest in Green Lantern by way of his feature film, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights will be a fitting and welcome introduction to the character, as well as the expansive universe and mythos that go along ...
